Mono- / Bi-/ Semi-/ Annual

“Mono” is a prefix meaning “one” (1), as in monorail.

The other prefixes refer to (denote) frequency of an act, such as:

Semi-weekly = twice each week

    “I would like to be paid semi-weekly.”

Semi-Monthly = twice each month, every half month

    “I am paid semi-monthly, right now.”

Bi-weekly = every two weeks

    "This means I get a bi-weekly check for my efforts.”

Bi-monthly = every two months

    “I used to be paid bi-monthly; that was quite a stretch from paycheck to paycheck.”

Semi-annually = twice a year; every six months

    “I would like to get a raise semi-annually.”

Annually = once each year

    “Unfortunately, I only receive a raise in pay annually.”
