10. Do not judge a book by its cover! Assumption is the bane of reasoning.

This is, of course, a proverb. Literally, it means that you might enjoy a certain book, even if there are not any exciting pictures on the cover and even if the cover is plain, rather than fancy.

Looks can be deceiving. Beauty is only skin deep. Appearances can be deceptive.

These sayings state that you cannot tell what lies beneath the surface until you look and are intended to guide you in the following way:

When one assumes anything one can make a mistake. There is another proverb that states: when you assume, you make an ass out of u and me. This is a very frequent problem with people, we think we know what the other person thinks, means, likes, wants, etc. Rather, we should seek to define our terms confirming something, by, for example, asking questions

Do not assume that you know; rather, true wisdom lies in understanding that there are limits to your own knowledge, skills and abilities. True wisdom is when you know that there are things you do not know. True wisdom is admitting, recognizing and always being aware of

1) the fact that you do not and can not know everything,

2) what you do know AND

3) of what you do not know.

Always, be encouraged to explore, think, imagine, test out ideas, think for yourself, then confirm your findings with authorities, sources, document your thoughts, share them with others.
